Arizona and Alaska are the only two states which assess a special "sales" tax on renters. This tax ranges from 1.8% to 3% of the amount of the rent. Renter Nation believes that this tax is regressive, unfairly singles out renters for punishment, is not deductible for Federal income tax purposes unlike property taxes, and in many instances falls on the poor and senior citizens living on fixed incomes.
Renters and the multifamily housing industry need to unite to stop this insidious tax in its tracks and keep it from spreading to the rest of the country.
